REA Statistics show Australia is obsessed with property

Australia’s obsession with property has continued this year with realestate.com.au revealing their statistics for the year.

  • A single realestate.com.au user viewed more than 17,000 unique property listings this year, almost 50 per day[1].
  • 6.5 million visits to property listings on realestate.com.au on average every day[2].
  • 110 million hours spent looking at property and news on realestate.com.au so far in 2016[3].
  • The realestate.com.au app has now reached 6 million downloads across iOS and Android[4].

The results are in and Australians are undeniably property obsessed. With demand on our site at the highest levels recorded, realestate.com.au can now reveal just how deep our obsession runs.

Incredibly, a single realestate.com.au user viewed more than 17,000 unique property listings in a single year, which is almost 50 per day[5].

In an average month, an audience of 5.9 million visit realestate.com.au[6], and so far in 2016, our users spent 110 million hours looking at property and news, or in other words, 4.5 million days, 12,500 years[7], or 152 lifetimes[8] in a single year.

So far realestate.com.au has recorded over 6.5 million visits to property listings a day on average[9] this year, that’s 2.1 billion visits to property listings[10] and counting.

They say that a picture tells a 1000 words, and it’s true that searching for your property is a visual experience. Our site recorded 22 billion views of property images[11] during the year, the equivalent of 45,000 every minute[12]. In fact, if you printed out every viewed photo, you would need to travel around the world 83 times just to lay them all out[13].

The way people are looking at property is always changing, and in 2016 the realestate.com.au app moved past 6 million downloads across iOS and Android[14], a 23% increase year-on-year[15]

In 2016, the largest and most engaged audience of property seekers in Australia[16] continue to trust realestate.com.au as the home to connect them with all things property across desktop, tablet and mobile.

Henry Ruiz, REA Group Chief Digital Officer, commented: “2016 was a huge year for our users. It’s incredible to see the numbers generated on realestate.com.au and leaves little doubt that as a nation, we’re incredibly obsessed with property, whether it be people actively looking to buy or people searching for property inspiration.

“No matter where someone is on their property journey, Australians trusted realestate.com.au to connect them with property across desktop, tablet and mobile throughout the year. We made some significant changes to our experiences in the past year, launching new products that are even smarter and more personalised, like our realestate.com.au app, which has now been downloaded more than 6 million times across iOS and Android.”

Nerida Conisbee, REA Group Chief Economist, commented: “Australia’s property obsession peaked in October this year when interest reached the highest levels recorded according to the REA Group Property Demand Index, which compares the number of people looking at properties on realestate.com.au with the number of properties for sale on the site.

“Although the increase in the index was partly due to a decline in supply, the driving force has been the rapid rise in the number of people looking to buy property in Australia.

“And it’s not just Australians that are obsessed with property. Interest in Australian property from overseas is also strong, with people from the US, UK, Singapore, New Zealand and China looking regularly on realestate.com.au.”
